Samsung reportedly banned employees from using popular generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Bard and Bing for security reasons.
The Korea-based company informed employees of one of its largest departments of the new policy on Monday, Bloomberg reported. The ban is due to concerns that data used by AI platforms could be stored on external servers and end up being shared with others, Bloomberg reported.
“Interest in generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT has grown internally and externally,” Samsung told employees. “While this interest is focused on the usefulness and effectiveness of these platforms, there are also growing concerns about the security risks posed by generative AI.”
Generative AI captured public attention with the November launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a chatbot powered by a powerful AI engine capable of writing software, having conversations and composing poetry. . Microsoft uses ChatGPT’s technology base, GPT-4, to improve Bing search results, offer advice on composing emails, and help create presentations.
The new policy stems from heightened concerns about AI risk. In March, hundreds of AI executives and technology experts signed an open letter urging major AI labs to halt development of AI systems, citing “profound risks” to human society.
The new policy comes after Samsung engineers accidentally leaked internal source code by uploading it to ChatGPT, the memo said.
“Headquarters is reviewing security measures to create a safe environment for the safe use of generative AI to improve employee productivity and efficiency,” the memo said. “However, until these measures are prepared, we are temporarily limiting the use of generative AI.”
The new rules ban the use of generative AI systems on Samsung computers, tablets and phones, Bloomberg reported. Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
